Trinidad and Tobago FIFA Assistant Referee Caleb Wales has described his Gold Cup appearance as fulfilling and valuable towards his ongoing development.
Wales’ stay with the CONCACAF team of officials lasted for the entire tournament as he was selected as the fourth official reserve for the Final between eventual winners Mexico and the United States at Soldier Field in Chicago. Prior to that he officiated in the Costa Rica versus Nicaragua and Jamaica versus Curacao Group phase matches in San Jose and Los Angeles.
“My Gold Cup experience was amazing, fulfilling and a valuable experience overall,” Wales told TTFA Media.
“This being my first Gold Cup appointment, I was impressed by the level of excellence and professionalism displayed by the refereeing team.
Wales gave a brief description of the run of events at the Refereeing headquarters in Dallas for the tournament.
“There was physical training everyday at the headquarters in Dallas, a review of the previous day’s matches and a refinement of skills on the off days. By game day we were well prepared to deliver exactly what the game needed from our pre-match analysis.
Wales returned home and took up duties immediately in the just concluded TTFA Youth Invitational tournament and is expected to officiate in upcoming CONCACAF Nations League and other competition matches at the various levels.
“Being the only Trinidad and Tobago official at the Gold Cup it felt good and then it was an accomplishment to be considered for the final in Chicago. It speaks volumes as to what hard work, sacrifices and consistent performances can lead to. Hopefully this can be seen as an indicator to fellow officials in Trinidad and Tobago as to what is possible and what we should be aiming for,” Wales concluded.
