T&T Women top CFU Olympic qualifiers with 1-0 win over P/Rico

Trinidad and Tobago’s Senior Women’s Team defeated a tricky Puerto Rico outfit 1-0 in the Final of the CFU Olympic Qualifying Tournament on Friday night at the Ato Boldon Stadium. The winner was scored by Karyn Forbes.

Forbes converted from close range in the 24th minute to separate both teams as the visitors tested the hosts in a game which would also serve as a warm up for the two friendlies against world champions United States next month.

Annie Lee Mendez had Puerto Rico’s best opportunity with a shot that forced goalkeeper Kimika Forbes to push onto the cross bar in the 61st. Teammate Selimar Pagan would later go past her defender only to look on in dismay as he shot went inches wide of the far post with five minutes left on the clock.

Before that Forbes would also go close for T&T but blasted over bar from close range. And Tasha St Louis, who scored the winner two days earlier against Jamaica, had a shot on the turn saved by the goalkeeper on an assist by Ahkeela Mollon.

“We were pleased to come away with the result tonight. I think the players deserve full credit for their efforts. It was not an easy tournament but the main thing is that we were unbeaten and we topped the region,” interim coach Anthony Creece told TTFA Media.

Defender Arin King added: “It was definitely a battle. We had a lot of outside noise in our headsĀ  but we stayed focused on the task at hand . We fought for one another and that’s what taken us to the next round.

“We need to stay committed and we need our preparation for the next round. We have the heart, desire and passion to play. We know what we need to do for the next phase.”

Next up T&T faces the USA in two back to back friendlies in December before the CONCACAF Final Round of Olympic qualification in the US in February.
